Thanksgiving : a short story
After the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492 on the shores of future American Colonies,
Jacques Cartier, sent by King Francis I in 1534, explored Canada, the bay and the Saint Lawrence River and the northeastern United States,
Samuel de Champlain arrived from France in Canada, Novelle Scotland in 1604 and helped found the Acadia, a French colony in the Maritime Provinces of Canada.
In 1607, King James of England sent three ships to the "New World", with 100 settlers who arrived on the East Coast, currently the state of Virginia, near Washington DC, the US capital . These settlers founded the city of Jamestown, the first European city of the Colonies.
We come to the story of the Mayflower, the Pilgrims and Thanksgiving:
First, it means to Thanksgiving? Word for word: "Give thank you" or "Say thank you." That is to say, "Recognizing be."
Europe, especially England and France, was a fierce hostility between the Catholic and Protestant religions. So much so that a hundred English pilgrims persecuted by the British government decided to leave their countries to emigrate to America.
It is the adventure of the famous "Mayflower", "(May Flower), a sail boat which left Plymouth harbor of England in September 1620, with on board a hundred pilgrims 'The Pilgrim Fathers' ( Pilgrim Fathers).
These 110 pilgrims wanted to find a place where they could practice their religion freely. By early December 1620 - in winter - they landed in Massachusetts. They named the village they will rely, Plymouth.
Half the settlers died that first winter of hunger, cold and disease.
The local Indians, the Wampanoag, with the Head Samoset and his friend Squanto, arrived during March and helped to build housing, taught them how to make vegetable gardens to grow vegetables and especially corn and learned to hunt and sin for food.
(There are very few examples in the world where civilizations meet for the first time and which are totally different in every respect - language, tradition, religion, lifestyle - do not conflict, but Instead, respect each other and help each other to continue living in peace.)
In October 1621, the harvest was exceptional pilgrims and settlers were able to make reservations corn, beans and pumpkin (pumpkin) for the winter to come ... .they were saved ...!
The Governor of the colony, William Bradford, decided to declare a day of thanksgiving and sharing Thanksgiving with the Indians who were very helpful. They brought venison and turkey roasting, and of course they all ate corn on the cob!
Abraham Lincoln, President of the USA in the years 1860-1865, proclaimed that this annual festival of the state of Massachusetts would be national and would be held each year the fourth Thursday of November. This festival has become traditional, such as Christmas, but not gifts ... ..
It is a family celebration, but also friends. For example, my sister and her husband will not be with their children, because they are far away and they have recently seen: they invited three other couples who would be alone for Thanksgiving. Each couple will bring food to share for this great meal.
According to the website of the Embassy of the United States:
"It was during the Thanksgiving that Americans travel more by plane and car to get together with their families and with friends. Many of them attend a parade organized for the occasion, including that of Macy's, which is televised live from New York. Others follow on television of football games. Overseas, US troops are entitled to a traditional meal that day.
A stuffed turkey accompanied by mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cranberry jelly and pumpkin pie are the basic elements of a Thanksgiving meal. (Note: Add plenty of vegetables of all colors, rolls, several desserts and good wine ...!)
Thousands of charitable organizations serve hot meals to the needy and those who come, and millions of frozen turkeys are offered to families each year.
Among these generous citizens included members of the Indian tribe Morongo San Bernardino (California) that provide for twenty-three-year aid to families in need during the day of Thanksgiving. In 2012, the tribe announced that it had provided 20,000 turkeys, the highest number since the start of his help.
This is a good reminder of the role Native Americans played in the first American Thanksgiving, a festival organized by the first pilgrims to thank the Indians have passed their knowledge and know-how without which they probably would not survive. "
Thanksgiving is the holiday for me I prefer the whole year; being with family and friends, come closer or further away, spend a day at the fireplace (as usual, it is cold - at least where I lived) and around a good table full of dishes offered by host and every guest.
In most churches in America, Thanksgiving is celebrated during a special Mass. In my town, where there are a dozen different Christian religions, each year one of these churches together all believers for one Mass of thanks and recognition, a large share.
Often, before or during the meal, each person has the opportunity to express its thanks and gratitude for everything she has in life: health, family, a job, good friends, etc.
For me and for many Americans, Thanksgiving means * Share and proclaim his recognition.
